Ahmici- There and Back Again

Last week I had the great pleasure of accompanying one of my oldest and dearest friends back to the place where we first met almost 20 years ago. I was a newly qualified Army Photographer and Roger Allen a seasoned photographer for the Daily Mirror, the location and event was the Ahmici Massacre in Central Bosnia; where 116 Muslim men, women and children were slaughtered by members of a particularly deranged section of the Croatian Army know as the Ustasha. This groups forebears had cut their teeth as it were in the Holocaust where they played and active and enthusiastic part in  “The Final Solution”.

On the 16th April 2013 at 0600 in the morning  it will be the 20th anniversary of the Ahimici Massacre and I will publish the story of my experiences then and what happened when I returned to the Village of Ahmici last week.

While it is by its very nature a disturbing and harrowing story particularly for those who suffered and died, it is also a story of hope and the persistence of  decency and the human spirit.

  1. A tragic and yet further embarrassing example of our lack of humanity.
